About the project

This site, located in a 20,300-sf lot in Downtown Oakland, originated as a cashier manufacturing site, then a gas station, and then a day spa. The project consisted of the renovation of a Type III-A, building of 7,000 sf that is surrounded by 5,500 sf of play area. This existing single-story remodel included the addition of ‘open concept’ classroom space with acoustical paneling throughout it, commercial kitchen, offices, bathrooms for children and adults and storage space.

A playful color scheme was added throughout the building for children, parents and staff to enjoy. There is also a single men’s and women’s bathroom, and a quarantine room with a bathtub in case any child gets sick (despite its name that bathroom was designed pre-COVID). Children’s restrooms elements such as toilets, compartments, grab bars, and dispensers are ADA compliant.
