Safety

We enforce safety regulations through leadership, training, standards, and enforcement.

We reinforce protective equipment rules and safe practices through tailgates, repetitive signage, inspections and supervision.
We consider protection of the general public in everything we do.
We have been awarded the Construction Employers Association “Excellence in Safety” award for a number of years and will continue to work hard to maintain our distinguished safety record.

Our History

We’ve built a great foundation in the Bay Area

1972

Tom McCoy

In 1972 Tom McCoy was attending U.C. Berkeley as an Architecture major. He worked on weekends and school breaks as a carpenter. His father was a carpenter, too, so he grew up knowing the trade.
1972

Moe Wright

Meanwhile, also in 1972 Moe Wright was attending UC Berkeley as an Art major. He did odd jobs as a painter, handyman and gardener. At U.C. he took a class in scene building for the student theater, The Playhouse.
Marty Pelatowski

Marty Pelatowski was a retired contractor and carpenter who worked part-time at the scene shop at the U.C. Playhouse. His father, an emigrant carpenter from Poland, had taught Marty the old country trades of carving and fine craftsmanship.
1974

Berkeley Builders established

Marty Pelatowski introduced Tom and Moe in 1973 and added them to his hippy carpenter cadre. He supplied them with mentorship and also jobs for his old customers. In 1974, Tom and Moe created a partnership with a contractor’s license. They named it Berkeley Builders, after a company started by Marty’s deceased brother.
July 4, 1984

Annual Summer Picnic

By the early ‘80’s Berkeley Builders had grown well beyond the two partners and started to move from strictly residential construction to some commercial work. Tom and Moe remained the principals and moved the office from Berkeley to Oakland.

BBI Company Picnic

In the 90’s Berkeley Builders became BBI Construction, and Kay Chan joined the company as a temp clerical worker in 1995. She decided to stay and put the company on a sure accounting and administrative foundation.
1996

Will Rogan

As the ranks grew a young, ambitious guy fresh from New Jersey was brought on to help run the growing backlog of commercial construction. Will Rogan joined the company in 1996 and immediately made a big impression.
1998

BBI Holiday Card

By the turn of the century, the company was set. We had 25 years of experience and an excellent staff committed to the quality and craftsmanship that inspired Tom and Moe to start the company.
2010

Tom, Moe, Kay, Will at BBI 40th

Around 2010 BBI Construction co-founders welcomed Kay Chan and Will Rogan into the leadership of the company. Kay and Will carry on the core values BBI Construction was founded on, providing quality construction for the best value.
2021

Today's Principals

Today, BBI Construction is led by Tom McCoy-Principal, Will Rogan-President, Kay Chan - CFO, Tom Lemire-Principal and Moe Wright – who will phase into retirement at the end of 2021. As the firm approaches the milestone of 5 decades of experience serving Bay Area communities, co-founders and new leaders alike are committed to hands-on work with customers to produce high-quality, durable projects.
