About the project

This was a multi-building project at San Francisco’s historic Crissy Field. Work included renovation, ADA and seismic upgrade of a two-story concrete historic landmark building plus construction of a new 11,800 sq. ft. addition for use as an education and community environmental center.  The “Warming Hut” was built in 1909 as a warehouse. It is now used as an information center, a bookstore, and a cafe. Damage from post beetles and water had destroyed most of the original structure and envelope of the building.

BBI removed, refurbished and reassembled all existing features contributing to the historic interpretation of the building. Building materials were selected for recycled content, low toxicity levels, and potential for reuse, including recycled barn wood for interior finishes on the Warming Hut.  Work was done under low noise and dust control, and during restricted hours due to its location in the historic Presidio. The Warming Hut project received the National Park Service Environmental Achievement Award.
