About the project

The Sobering Center and Detoxification Facility was built for Alameda County’s Behavioral Healthcare Services. This adult non-medical alcoholism and drug abuse recovery treatment facility, located on the Alameda County Fairmont Hospital Campus in San Leandro, serves low-income and indigent residents who are suffering from the debilitating effects of alcohol and substance overuse and frequently co-occurring mental illnesses. The project delivery method was design-build with the architects.

The Detoxification Facility was an existing 7,200 sq. ft. wood-frame building that was extensively remodeled. It’s a 32-bed facility that houses what the County refers to as the “Social Model Detoxification Program.” The scope of work included selective interior demolition, construction of new walls, new interior finishes, installation of toilet rooms, and new HVAC equipment and other utility functions.

The 5,800 sq. ft., single-story Sobering Center building is a 24/7 facility where as many as 50 individuals can stay an average of four to six hours. The goal is to provide an environment in which inebriates can allow the effects of chemical intoxicants to abate and to regain their functionality.
