In January, BBI Construction completed the new Sobering Center and Detoxification Facility for Alameda County's Behavioral Healthcare Services. This adult nonmedical alcoholism drug abuse recovery treatment facility, located on the Alameda County Fairmont Hospital Campus in San Leandro, will serve low-income and indigent residents who are suffering from the debilitating effects of alcohol and substance overuse and frequently co-occurring mental illnesses. The project delivery method was design-build with Shah Kawasaki Architects.

The location of the Detoxification Facility was an existing 7,200 sq. ft. wood frame building that was extensively remodeled. It is a 32-bed facility that will house what the County refers to as the "Social Model Detoxification Program." This program will be a comprehensive intervention program which will include a structure of process groups, accommodations for non-English speakers, 12-step groups, HIV and Hepatitis C testing and education, assessment, post-Detox planning/placement/referral, and transportation to treatment interviews or other related services. Consumer stay will likely average 3-5 days, but individuals may stay longer if awaiting a specific treatment placement. The scope of work included selective interior demolition, construction of new walls, new interior finishes, installation of toilet rooms, and new HVAC equipment and other utility functions.

The new 5,800 sq. ft. single story Sobering Center building is a 24/7 facility where as many as 50 individuals can stay an average of four to six hours. The goal is to provide an environment in which inebriates can allow the effects of chemical intoxicants to abate and to regain their functionality.
